Awesomeness in Evergreen
by Mitchell Sprinsky on Jan.14, 2012, under Colorado, Ride Reports
I am getting good at picking the right snow ride days. It’s all in the temps and inches. My suspicions that Evergreen would be right for the picking was correct. I met up with Bob at the Stego lot and carpooled over in The Beast.
I like big trucks and big bikes, but that’s just cake for the snow.
Aldefers / Three Sisters offered up some great conditions today, spurred on by the 54F temperature and tacky snow. Not too slushy and not too icy. The sun and blue sky added its usual Colorado glory. It drew my attention to things I’ve ridden by and never notices. I don’t know what plant this is, but it reminds me of micro organisms under a microscope.
The first couple of miles were snow, dirt, and ice covered as evidenced by Bob’s caution on the turn.
It’s an incredible blessing (no reference to Tebow) to be able to ride great trails in the middle of January and give a little back to the land owners at the same time. While we only saw only one other bike out there (he didn’t venture too far because he hit some drifting snow), we did get to talk to a lot of amazed hikers. The didn’t get the whole riding in the snow thing, but they were fascinated by the fat bike.
Most out here would be upset by the “Spring” skiing conditions in January. A few of us welcome the “spring” snow biking conditions.
White dirt!
The demonstration forest taught us a lesson on switchbacks in the snow. Pedal before the turn, not during it.
We had a little hike-a-bike through some drifts, but 95% of the ride was smiles!
