Roughing It, Schnauzer Style – Season II
by Mitchell Sprinsky on Mar.18, 2012, under Colorado, Ride Reports
I was eager to start season two of roughing it. I spent an entire week de-winterizing the camper and anxiously awaiting Friday afternoon. Of course, I was over prepared as always.
You have to understand how my mind works. I am a little crazy. All I could think about was finding a place to park the camper and my truck. Being able to turn around was a premium. SCORE! My early arrival netted the supreme RV/Camper dispersed site in Buffalo Creek.
I invited a few people up to share the space, but spring skiing won out over dry dirt. Fat Bob was going to come up on Saturday, but I think the camper pic convinced him to head out in the dark. Drinking by the fire was the evening entertainment.
Saturday, brought 78F and a LONG day on the bike. We started from the campsite, which meant coming back was going to be a painful climb. The last mile was a death march, but more fire, BBQ duck, veggies, and beer eased the pain.
Did I mention how dry it was? Good for biking, bad for fire season. This will probably be the last open fire camping for some time.
We did Shinglemill, Morrison Creek, 543, Gashouse, Charlies Cutoff, Homestead, Sandy Wash, 543, —–, Buffalo Burn, Colorado Trail, and back to the campsite.
I think I nearly killed Bob by the end of the ride. That was after surviving near asphyxiation the night before, courtesy of Mr. Heater. Note to self, change your CO detector batteries every year!
It was a spectacular day.
You can’t take the East Coaster out of a Colorado resident, when beckoned by the rare log-over.
Yummy dirt!
The Lion sleeps tonight.
We ate like pigs, drank, and the wind came. Neither of has the energy to ride Sunday morning, though I did see a lot of people coming down into BC on my way out. Hope the wind wasn’t too bad.
