RR: Short Steep Siglespeeding Singletrack

And lots of log overs, including a great big nasty one you’ll see later on.
And the surprise of the day, hills in Burlington County!
There’s not a lot of acreage in this park, but the amount of short
steep climbs, logovers, and off camber roots provided one of the
hardest workouts I had in a long time. It made me wish I hadn’t brought
the singespeed. The pain was excrutiating after every climb. That said,
there were still smiles at the top of every hill.
Of course what goes up must come down. There are plenty of steep
downhills. The exposed roots and even an odd rock give it some
technical spots. This is way steeper than it looks.
Unfortunately this park is so compact, the downs are short lived and
lead right back to short steep climbing. Before going up the next
climb, there is a log over that I hit at a pretty good clip. When I
come off it, I’m doing a rolling wheelie on the front wheel for 10
feet. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to do that again, even with
trying. Fortunately I save myself from an endo this time. Yeh, I walked
this one. 16/34 was not the ratio for me and this.
After reach the top again, we choose the drop off chute. Well, Mike
tells me there’s a drop off. So I send him down with the camera and
when he’s set for the pic, I head down. OK, I’m thinking maybe a little
6" sand ledge or something. Coming down the hill, I see a small little
log as he screams drop. I say to myself it’s just a little log over and
prepare to lift my front wheel and then the back at full speed over
theflat part of this (at least what I saw):
I lift the front wheel up and over, then the back goes up but the front
hasn’t come down yet. Oh no, something is about to go terribly wrong.
What happened to my little log over.
Of course the air fork I have on this has the rebound set to orbit
mode. The fork hits, compresses, and then like a road runner cartoon,
Wylie Coyote (me) is sprung 7′ in the air. It was almost like a high
diver as I do a full flip to a side face plant. Thank you helmet for
doing your job. Of course, Mike misses the picture and takes the
aftermath of my face.
After recovering, I call uncle and we head out.
An hour here is definately an extreme workout for a weekday evening. I
was more beat up after this than the 26 mile ride on Sunday. I’ll be
back but with more gears and more suspension plus the knowledge of
where to do a wheelie drop!
