Mercer County Park

by on Apr.10, 2005, under New Jersey, Ride Reports

Once the sun came out this morning it quickly went from 42F to 62F by
the time I reached the parking lot at Mercer County Park. By midday it
was in the 70’s! It was a perfect day for riding and as a bonus I threw
the kayak on the car as well. Mercer County Park, although flat, offers
some great trails with lots of logovers and a huge lake that is used
for crew and other water sports.
The group gathers and Mike N. New Bob, Steve, Jay, Joe, jeff, and I
head out. I’m on the singlespeed today.

The singletrack is nice and packed despite the rain a few days ago.
Soon we come upon the jump section. BMXers are always changing this
around, but a few of us play here on the MTB’s. This is Mike “Air”
Newmans terrain, and he shows us how it’s done.

You can also view a small movie of the previous photo’s jump here:

Through playing we head back out on the trail and through the Megan
Kanka memorial. For those that do not know, this is the little girl for
whom Megan’s Law was created. This is the law that forces sex offenders
to register in the town they reside. She was found dead at this
location and an outside church with pews full of stuffed animals were
left. It’s very sad, but I am glad the trail goes through here so that
everyone will remember.
We then hit the “maze”. Three miles of baby trees spaced closeer than
your bars. It’s a great way to practive trackstands .

We then finish up with some more great singletrack around the edge of the pond.

This was a great place for the singlespeed and I had no problem keeping
up with the geared folk except for two thorn flats. Back at the parking
lot, I drive around the corner to the marina and set the kayak in the
water for it’s maiden voyage. A wonderful 90 minutes of cruising the
lake and rescuing radio controlled boats whose batteries were shot or
too far from shore.
