Mitchell’s School of Trail Guiding

by on May.14, 2006, under Uncategorized

Niether of us really knew the trails well here and there were no
trail maps around.  Somehow I got volunteered as the guide.  How hard
could it be?  Just follow the trail.  Well, not so easy anymore as
quite a few trails here have been newly closed off to MTB.

I
head out on the trails I remember and then come to something that looks
now.  Theres now anti-bike sign so I say let's take it.  It's a bit
overgrown and very slick.  You can sure tell it's spring though.

Well, I must have missed something because nothing looks familiar anymore and soon we are climbing fireroads on the fields.

Another turn and another new trail.  We are now missing all the singletrack and going back and forth on the same fireroad.  It all looks alike!

This isn't funny anymore.  My bearings are totally off and now we are riding paved road.  Where are the trails?  Suddenly things start looking familiar and I see the creek we normally cross.  Now it looks like we are going backwards.  The water is much higher than normal as we walk across some very wet rocks.

That's was good as now the trail goes straight up some wet roots and rocks to another field!  I am still lost!

Out of the field and onto another road which brings us to a nice covered bridge.

Somehow we make it back to the same trail we started on and find a nice piece of twisty singltrack.

I vowed to get at least 12 miles in to make it worth the while, so we head up the opposite end of the parking lot to the best trail in the park.  The rocky goodness gives us another two miles for 12.  The plan was to be back home by one for Mother's day and we did it.  I am no longer teaching at guide school.
